Bosom buddies, Valentine and Proteus, bid a tearful farewell on a street in Verona.  Valentine is off to see the world while Proteus stays home in Verona, tied by his love for Julia.  The Two Gentlemen of Verona, a comedy by William Shakespeare, is considered by some to be his first play.  It deals with some of the playwright's favorite themes of friendship and infidelity, the conflict between friendship and love, and the foolish behavior of people in love.  For many, the best characters in the play are Launce, the clownish servant of Proteus, and his dog, Crab, to whom many attribute to be the most scene-stealing non-speaking role ever created.
