In 1904 in the Pittsburgh Hill District, on the eve of Aunt Esther's birthday, Citizen Barlow comes to her home seeking asylum.  Instead, she sets him off on a spiritual journey to find a city in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean!  This play is the 9th in the playwright's ten-play cycle that has recorded the American Black experience and helped to define generations.  Also, don't miss the following exciting festival activities: October 11- "Sitting at the Feet of an Elder" Professor Emeritus Johnetta Haley shares her life story at 1:3p p.m. at the Friends' Corner in the Lovejoy Library; October 13 - immediately following the evening performance of GEM OF THE OCEAN, there will be a post-show discussion, "African American History and the Long Sojourn for Freedom" which will include the show's director and members of the cast, moderated by Dr. Jessica Harris, Associate Professor Historical Studies and Director of Black Studies; October 14 - enjoy the film, "The Ground on Which I Stand" a look at August Wilson and followed by a panel discussion.  Festival Activities, other than the play, are free admission.
