An evening with Coast Salish carver
Felix Solomon
SIUE will celebrate Native American Heritage Month during November by hosting Felix Solomon, an active member of the Lummi Nation, one of the Coast Salish tribes of northwest Washington. He is one of the most significant indigenous carvers in the United States because he is one of the only master carvers worldwide who carries forward the ancestral carving tradition of the American Salish Coast.
The public is invited to an evening of song and art with Solomon. He will provide an illustrated discussion of his artwork, which includes totem poles, ceremonial masks and other spirtually-empowered carvings. He will also speak about his work as a conservator, teacher and mentor who works to continue the traditions of his culture.
For information about Solomon’s public lecture, call (618) 650-3246.
Sponsored by the Native American Studies Program, the Departments of Anthropology, Historical Studies, Philosophy and Political Science, the College of Arts and Sciences, SIUE Alumni Association, the Vice Chancellor for Administration, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, and the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion
