    Biological Sciences - Seminar
    Science East 1105

The Department of Biological Sciences presents: Gerardo Camilo (St.Louis University)

"Bee diversity in urban environments: Ecological and Socio-economic drivers"

Dr. Camilo's research focuses in understanding the role that space has on ecological processes and structures. Most of his work centers around populations and communities of bee pollinators in urban environments. Over half of all the human population already live in cities, and is expected that by 2050 two out of every three people will live in a city. Understanding how ecosystem services, like the pollination of crops, is affected by the urban environment is of crucial importance. Cities are complex structures comprised of industrial, residential and green spaces of different sizes across a network of roads, sewers, power lines, etc. Furthermore, differences in social, economic and cultural status also affects how people use and alter ecosystem processes in cities. Our work has shown that bees in St. Louis city are responding the many of these parameters.

The Department of Biological Sciences hosts a series of weekly seminars each spring and fall semester in association with its colloquium courses for undergraduates (BIOL 492 and 492M) and graduate students (BIOL 592). Seminar speakers are usually invited from other universities and research institutions but occasionally the program will include faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences or other units at SIUE. Talks cover a wide range of topics in biology.
